you just cant help but click
you think its always just one web page away
finally you will find what youve always been looking for
the internet is vast and seemingly endless
but its also made by people like you and me
looking but not finding
like reading a new self help book
it promises you the world
and its always a let down when you find out your friend has already read it
because their life didnt really turn around like the book claimed it would
if we looked at this from a purely physiological point of view then
by trying to satisfy our unsatisfaction
we are focusing on the feelings of unsatisfaction
to figure out what it needs
so as we focus on those feelings
it reinforces the brain circuitry used to produce those feelings
just like a musician reinforces the circuitry required to play his instrument by constantly practicing
we know that the more a brain circuit runs the stronger it becomes
so maybe the answer is to stop looking
start focusing on whatever it is that brings us satisfaction
that will reinforce the circuitry involved with feelings of satisfaction
and make it easier to feel it again
(it's ironic that i found the inspiration for this on the internet: http://www.ted.com/talks/matthieu_ricard_on_the_habits_of_happiness.html
of course it still makes sense to spend a little bit of time trying to understand why you are unsatisfied with certain things. because that can sometimes lead to practical improvements with your life. but i think it is helpful to keep the above in mind. because sometimes i think we are just habitually/compulsively unsatisfied and by focusing on that feeling, we can strengthen it..)
